Herpetic Esophagitis Confirmed by Esophagoscopy

Abstract
The etiolgy of infectious esophagitis are herpes simplex, varicella-zoster, cytomegalovirus and candida.
Herpetic esophagitis could develop in the cases of malignancy, long term steroid use, immune suppression and radiation treatment. But there are no characteristic clinical symptoms and signs. Because it is very difficult to diagnose on the clinical ground, there has been autopsy reports.
The clinical course of herpetic esophagitis is complex. In the normal immune state, it takes the same clinical course as oral and genital herpetic infections and heals spontaneously. But in the immune compromised state, it may take the fetal course due to bleeding, encephalitis, pneumonia, bacterial or fungal super infection or fulminant hepatitis.
There was no case report in korea. So we report the 1 case of herpetic esophagitis confirmed by esophagoscopy and biopsy.
